Quilt Top Prep

Preparing your quilt top for quilting

Do:

  • Wash and press your quilt top. Use Best Press or other starch alternative for best results.
  • Square up your quilt top. If you are unsure how to do this. Search YouTube for a tutorial.
  • Check for any open seams and repair them.
  • Trim any loose threads.
  • Label the top, bottom and sides if your quilt is directional.

Don’t:

  • Attach the binding before quilting.
  • Baste or pin the layers. Your quilt top, batting and backing will be loaded separately for quilting on the long arm frame.
  • The maximum quilt width is 106 inches. There is really no limit on length.

Backing

  • Provide backing that is at least 8 inches wider and 10 inches longer than your quilt top.
  • Do not provide bed sheets for backing.
  • Cotton fabric is preferred but an additional cost for minky, fleece or flannel as extra care is needed for stretch.
  • Pieced backing should have at least ½ inch seam allowance to lie flat.
  • The center seam should run side to side for best results.
  • Trim selvages.
  • Square up and press your quilt backing.
  • Use Best Press or other starch alternative for best results (not for minky or fleece).
  • You CAN attach your own label prior to shipping to me for quilting.

Batting

  • Please make sure it is at least 6 inches wider and longer than your quilt top.
  • Do not provide low quality batting such as mountain mist. It is not suitable for longarm quilting.
  • If you prefer, I can provide quality batting for an additional cost.

Ship

  • Protect in a plastic bag and package well.
  • Ship with insurance to my address.
  • Include labels and intake form.
